This course introduces the very basic concepts of linguistics. It discusses the basic notion of "language". "linguistics", "linguistic knowledge". as well as the scope of linguistics and its sub-fields. Phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, morphology, semantics and pragmatics are introduced. "The relevance of Linguistics in language teaching" will be the final topic to discuss, wrapping the whole topics and connecting linguistics and language teaching.
By the end of the course students will be familiar with how linguists approach and analyze speech sounds (phonetics), the organization of sounds in a language (phonology), and word structure (morphology), sentence structure (syntax) and meaning (semantics). Besides, they will be able to infer the relevance of linguistics in English language teaching.
