In general, this subject is designed to train
the students to understand the development of Islam in Indonesia. Islam has
contributed very significantly to the progress of the nation both in its
cultural and philosophical values. Since its establishment as a cultural power
in about early 13th century, Islam has played an influential role in
outlining the way of life for the nation. Thus, Islam
became an instrumental force
through a series of waves: international trade, the establishment of Muslim
sultanates, and social movements. Although
Indonesia is not an Islamic state, Islamic principles have strongly influenced
political decision making and, in a broader sense, social structure and general
culture as well.
