English is undoubtedly important for graduate students. They should have sufficient English proficiency to develop their knowledge and access current advances especially those related their major, as well as to share their ideas effectively to the wider community. This course is intended to equip every student with necessary skills to comprehend English texts, mainly to increase his or her academic aptitude. Besides, as the current institutional policy requires them to have sufficient English proficiency as shown by their TOEFL score, this course is also planned to introduce them to the TOEFL, i.e. the significance, the types of questions, general strategies to improve their TOEFL score, and tips and tricks to answer the TOEFL questions.
Therefore, the course is designed to combine TOEFL introduction and developing reading skills. To develop their reading comprehension skills, students will be trained to take gist of the main ideas of the text materials, to summarize, and eventually to present the summary to the class.
