Extensive Reading (ER) is the free reading of books and other written material that is not too difficult not too easy. ER is sometimes called Free Voluntary Reading. This is the way we usually read when we are reading for pleasure. ER materials could be novel, biography, article, short story, etc. ER is truly student-centered. Students select their own material, read on their own time, choose their own new words to learn, and do this all without the fear of tests and examinations.

The course is designed to:

-          Make ER students learn more words, acquire more grammatical structures, and be better readers and writers.

-          Enable the students to learn to become lifelong readers of English for pleasure and information.

-          Encourage students to begin autonomous ‘lifetime’ learning of English through reading for pleasure.

-          Improve and develop the student’s knowledge of English and the culture of reading and critical thinking skills through summarization (or reading reflection) and discussion

-          Produce independent readers who value reading as a life-long pursuit.
