This course is designed to develop the students’ competence in getting the meaning of words based on their contexts by identifying the possibly-appropriate clues and deciding the closely-referred meaning of specifically-used lexical items. Besides, it develope students’ competence in comprehending of non-fictional texts at upper-intermediate level (500-900 words in length), emphasizing the use of appropriate reading strategies to identify the Context clues, Finding Topics and Main Ideas, Finding Major and Minor Details, Recognizing Patterns of Organization, Organizing Textbook Material, Using Inference, Drawing Conclusion and Predicting Outcomes, Analyzing, Synthesizing and Speed Reading, Effective Textbook Reading, Critical Reading. In addition, students are also introduced to specialized texts such as brief, self contained texts commonly used in TOEFL reading tests. The skills of summarizing and evaluating texts are developed. While individual performances are noted, pair and group work should be encouraged. Assessment of success is based on portfolios and mid term as well as final examinations.
